"Kiff Story, Bru" - The Kiffness, Live in London (September 2023)
Date of event: 2nd September 2022
“Shoutout to the dude in the Springbok rugby shirt,” declared The Kiffness, as he capped off his sold-out show at The Garage last night in London.
Watching David Scott, a.k.a. ‘The Kiffness’, transfer his viral video mashups from webpage to stage was one of the weirdest, most post-modern gigs I’ve ever been to—something you feel could only happen in 2023 after a global pandemic turned this quirky South African DJ and electronic music producer into a worldwide Internet sensation who made us laugh ourselves silly during COVID-19 lockdowns.
Now his memes have come true in utterly absurd fashion.
As a South African fan, how does one fathom an overseas crowd singing along in real life to the likes of a cat meowing (‘Alugalug Cat’), a husky howling, or a fishmonger touting his ‘One Pound Fish’?
The Kiffness’ knack for morphing everyday events into house and jazz-infused EDM bangers has found root in a whole new fanbase overseas, and it was encouraging to see people over here sing, dance, and laugh to this down-to-earth social commentator with a beat.
David’s 29-date tour of the UK, Europe, and North America is just getting started, and London laid out the landscape of a post-COVID Kiffness show, with sections for once-unsung vendors turned viral, classic cat and dog jams, and a few surprises you might or might not have seen shared online over the past three years
Amid the hadeda calls and trumpet solos, The Kiffness also took time to add context to his crazy creations, telling stories to the crowd of how he found and supports the various vendors in his videos, as well as the process of piecing together a purr-fect mix.
But most of all, it was fun: laugh-out-loud, can-you-believe-this fun. Kiff story, bru.
