“New Day Rising, Same Sonic Storm” - Bob Mould solo electric live in London (March 2025)

Bob Mould of Hüsker Dü fame took the stage alone at The Lower Third in London last night, but the sheer force of his playing flooded the room like a full band was behind him. No soft reworkings, nor respite from a 45-minute sound bath of searing solo electric guitar.

This one-man punk show was one of just three special European album release gigs before Mould kicks off his full North American tour in April in support of his latest solo effort, Here We Go Crazy.

With his brilliant band of the past decade and a half back home in the States (drummer Jon Wurster and bassist Jason Narducy), Mould was armed with nothing but his guitar and his growl, proving that his rhythm-and-lead playing style doesn’t just carry the songs but also completely fills the space where a band would be with distortion and melody.

Whether you knew the songs or not, you floated along with them. As many as five tracks from Here We Go Crazy were featured in the setlist, so this was a new day rising for Mould and fans alike, as the fresh material slotted seamlessly alongside Sugar standouts and Hüsker Dü hits of yesteryear.

Standing on the edge of the Hoover Dam—within spitting distance but fortunately not in firing range—it was a rare chance to witness a legend up close, and at full volume.
